What is the Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM)?
Understanding why lasting change begins with the stories we live by.
Why do so many people remain stuck, even when they genuinely want to change?
It is a question that has stayed with me for many years.
Not only through my own experiences, but through countless conversations with people who are thoughtful, capable and genuinely committed to their personal growth. Again and again, I met individuals who knew exactly what they wanted to change. They recognised their patterns, understood their triggers and could often explain where those patterns had originated. They had read the books, listened to the podcasts and invested time and energy into becoming more self-aware.
Yet despite all of that awareness, they continued finding themselves in the same place.
They still struggled to set healthy boundaries. They still questioned their worth. They still avoided opportunities, overthought important decisions, or repeated relationship patterns they desperately wanted to change.
Watching this happen repeatedly led me to one simple but important question: What if awareness, although essential, is only the beginning of lasting transformation?
That question eventually led me to develop the Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM), a structured psychological and narrative coaching framework designed to help people identify, examine, and consciously reshape the inner narratives that influence their emotions, identity and behaviour.
If you would like to learn more about my professional journey and the experiences that shaped the development of the Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM), I invite you to visit my About page.
Awareness has become one of the most valued concepts within personal development, and rightly so. Without awareness, meaningful change is difficult because we cannot change what we have not yet recognised. Awareness helps us notice our habits, identify recurring patterns and acknowledge the ways in which our experiences continue to influence our lives.
However, through years of coaching conversations, I gradually came to realise that awareness, while essential, is rarely the whole story.
Knowing that we struggle with confidence does not automatically make us confident. Recognising that we avoid conflict does not suddenly make difficult conversations easier. Understanding that we tend to seek approval from others does not instantly free us from that need. Most people already possess far more awareness than they realise. The real challenge often lies in understanding why those patterns continue to feel so compelling, even after they have been recognised.
My experience has shown me that the answer frequently lies beneath the behaviour itself.
Every behaviour is usually connected to a story.
Many of those stories were never consciously chosen. They developed gradually as we interpreted our experiences and tried to make sense of the world around us. As children, we naturally looked for meaning. We learned what felt safe, what earned approval, what helped us belong and what protected us from emotional pain. In doing so, we also developed beliefs about ourselves.
Perhaps we concluded that we had to be perfect to be accepted.
Perhaps we learned that our opinions were not important.
Perhaps we believed we always had to be strong because nobody else would be.
At the time, those stories often served an important purpose. They helped us survive emotionally, adapt to our environment and make sense of experiences we were too young to fully understand.
The difficulty is that many of those narratives continue influencing our adult lives long after the original circumstances have changed.
What once protected us may now be limiting us.
What once helped us belong may now prevent us from being authentic.
What once kept us emotionally safe may now be stopping us from growing.
The Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM) was developed to explore those stories with curiosity rather than judgement.
Rather than asking only, "What behaviour would you like to change?", the framework gently asks different questions.
What story might be influencing that behaviour?
When did you first begin believing it?
Is that story still helping you today?
These questions are not about blaming the past or searching for someone to hold responsible. They are about creating understanding. When we understand the stories that have shaped our lives, we create space for choice. With choice, sustainable change becomes possible.
One of the core principles of the Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM) is that lasting transformation rarely begins with behaviour. Behaviour is often the visible expression of something much deeper. It reflects the beliefs we hold about ourselves, the meanings we have attached to our experiences and the identity we have gradually developed over time. If those deeper narratives remain untouched, behavioural change often requires constant effort because we are trying to act differently while continuing to believe the same story.
The purpose of the framework is not to erase our past or deny our experiences. Nor is it about replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations or pretending that life has always been easy. Instead, it offers a structured process of reflection that helps us understand where our stories came from, evaluate whether they still serve us and consciously decide which narratives we want to carry into the future.
The Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM) unfolds through five interconnected phases. Together, these phases create a journey from unconscious patterns towards conscious participation in our own lives.
The journey begins with Story Awareness, where we learn to recognise the internal narratives that quietly influence our everyday thoughts, emotions and behaviours. From there we move into Narrative Deconstruction, gently exploring where those stories originated and questioning whether they still reflect our present reality.
The third phase, Emotional Repatterning, focuses on understanding and gradually changing the emotional responses that keep familiar stories alive. As emotional patterns begin to shift, we enter Re-authoring Identity, intentionally developing a more accurate, compassionate and authentic understanding of who we are becoming. Finally, Behavioural Integration helps translate those new narratives into everyday choices, allowing change to become something we live rather than something we simply understand.
Each phase builds upon the previous one. Together they create a practical pathway towards sustainable change rather than temporary motivation. In the next article on the ISRM Reader, we'll explore each of these five phases in greater depth and discover how they work together to support meaningful transformation.
Although the Inner Story Reset Method ™ (ISRM) was developed within the context of transformational and narrative coaching, its principles extend far beyond coaching conversations. The stories we carry influence the way we lead, parent, communicate, build relationships, approach our careers, and respond to life's inevitable challenges. If you're interested in exploring how the Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM) is applied through one-to-one coaching, you're warmly invited to visit my Work with Me page, where you'll find more information about the coaching process and how we can work together.
Whether we recognise it or not, our narratives shape our daily decisions, often in ways that remain invisible until we intentionally pause to examine them.

Every one of us lives by stories.
Some are empowering.
Some are protective.
Some quietly hold us back.
The remarkable thing is that many of them have become so familiar that we no longer recognise them as stories at all. They simply feel like facts.
The Inner Story Reset Method™ (ISRM) is an invitation to pause long enough to notice the difference.
It invites us to become curious about the narratives that have shaped us, compassionate towards the reasons they developed, and intentional about the stories we choose to carry into the future.
Perhaps lasting transformation doesn't begin by asking,
"How do I change?"
Perhaps it begins by asking,
"What story have I been living... and is it still the story I want to live?"
If this article has prompted you to reflect on your own story and you're curious about what the next chapter could look like, I'd love to hear from you. You're welcome to get in touch through my Contact page.
